Staying Strong: Muscle, Movement and Recovery as We Age

Learn why strength supports healthy ageing and how exercise, recovery nutrition and MIP Colostrum may fit into an active routine.

Muscle is not only for sport. It helps us climb stairs, carry shopping, rise from a chair, maintain balance and keep participating in the activities we enjoy. Some loss of muscle mass and strength can occur with age, but regular resistance exercise remains a powerful signal for the body to adapt.

The useful goal is not extreme training. Two or more appropriately designed strength sessions each week, supported by everyday walking or other aerobic activity, can help maintain capacity. Anyone returning after a long break, living with pain or managing a medical condition should choose a level suited to them.

  • Maintaining strength supports mobility, confidence and independence.
  • Resistance exercise supplies the essential stimulus; nutrition and rest support recovery.
  • Colostrum research in older adults is promising but limited and used much larger study amounts than MIP’s standard serving.

Exercise provides the stimulus; recovery is where adaptation is supported. Adequate energy, sufficient dietary protein, hydration and sleep all matter. Spreading protein-containing foods across the day can be more useful than relying on one large evening meal.

Colostrum contains protein and bioactive components, but a standard 2 g MIP serving is not a meaningful replacement for a protein-rich meal or a dedicated protein supplement. Its role should be described separately from total protein requirements.

In one eight-week randomised trial, adults around 59 years of age completed resistance training while consuming either 60 g/day of bovine colostrum or a whey-protein complex. The colostrum group improved leg-press strength more, and a marker of bone resorption declined more, while several other outcomes improved similarly in both groups.

This is interesting evidence, but it does not show that a 2 g serving will reproduce the trial. The study combined a large amount of a particular colostrum product with supervised resistance training. The training itself was central, and results from one protocol should not be converted into promises for another product or dose.

Active adults may include MIP Colostrum as a consistent part of their wider nutrition routine. Individual routines vary, and some adults choose additional servings during demanding training or recovery while following the individual product label.
